Movement Mondays

About

Movement Mondays is a collective of movement facilitators who collaborate to offer sliding scale classes in dance and somatic movement practices for Manitoulin Island communities. All classes are open to movers of varying ages, experiences and abilities. No dance training necessary. See below for the classes we currently offer and our schedule.

Classes

Ecstatic Dance with Ann

Ecstatic dance is a free form dance, following the rhythm of the music to one’s own body’s needs. Dancers generally dance in bare feet, and there is no talking during the duration of the dance. Loosely following the work of movement pioneer Gabrielle Roth’s book “The 5 Rhythms”, the dance is one hour in length, following a musical arc of flowing-staccato-positive chaos-playful-stillness cycle. Dancers are encouraged to find their own groove and authentic movement throughout. It is a practice that has chapters globally, and is enjoyed by movers of all ages and abilities.

Somatic Yoga with Lesley

This class will explore beginner to moderate level yoga postures and sequences with an emphasis on ease and internal sensation. With the influence of Lesley’s osteopathic lens, she will guide us through basic anatomical explorations to help gain an embodied understanding of the movements. Somatic yoga is therapeutic in nature, and is an excellent foundation for all other movement practices.

Mindful Movement with Candice

Grounded in Candice’s experience in somatic and contemporary dance practices, this class helps participants connect with their bodies through guided movement sequences, improvisation activities and gentle stretching. Designed to be adaptable to various movement experiences and abilities, Candice leads us in discovering what joyful and easeful movement feels like for us. Some students describe the experience as a moving mediation.

Pow Wow Fitness with Sophie

Based on her extensive experience as a renowned educator, jingle dress dancer and "Movement as ceremony"  facilitator, Sophie's class is a place to learn about the history behind pow wow dances and have a fun cardio dance workout based on Jingle dress dance steps and other pow wow dances.
